OpenCAPIF @ ETSI 6G Monday: A retrospective

April 16, 2025

Last Monday ETSI held the 6G Monday event in its headquarters of Sophia Antipolis, France. OpenCAPIF was proud to send its Chair & Vice-Chair to a sunny rainy South of France to share with the specialized audience how OpenCAPIF came to be and how it has now grown, one year later, to a success story.

The event was an exceptional one-day gathering focused on exploring the key aspects of 6G technologies and related standards. It showcased the latest advancements in technology research while highlighting ongoing (pre)-standards activities in ETSI and early developments and plans in 3GPP for the upcoming Release-20. With a focus on the European 6G landscape, the program examined the status of key EC-funded projects that are successfully contributing to ETSI initiatives on standards and open source .

OpenCAPIF was part of the session “From Research to Standards - EU Projects Making Real Impact in ETSI,” which explored how EU-funded projects have contributed to ETSI pre-standards groups. This session included a deep dive into sensing for 6G and the role of open source in 6G. Silvia Almagia, ETSI Director of Software and Standards, first introduced the concepts around SDGs for David Artuñedo, Chair of ETSI SDG OpenCAPIF, to present on OpenCAPIF’s journey from EU research to ETSI SDG and its efficient collaboration in 3GPP, and Dimitris Tsolkas, Vice Chair of ETSI SDG OpenCAPIF and Deputy Technical Manager of the 6G-SANDBOX research project, to explain how 6G-SANDBOX is leveraging and contributing to open-source.

Don’t forget to read our dedicated story on the inception of OpenCAPIF and their latest achievement in providing feedback to 3GPP here!

We finished the day with a cocktail party – always useful to find new opportunities and collaboration paths.
